| ESSENTIALS |
This is a full itinerary that will appeal to those wanting to see the best the island has to offer. The heat and humidity can be tiring and there are a couple of long journeys (approx. 4 hrs each) on winding hill roads. Binoculars are useful for the wildlife safari. Recommended minimum age: 5 years. |
A NOTE TO PARENTS CONSIDERING G TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN |
We appreciate that parents wish their children to have a full range of experiences as possible as part of their development. The geographical and cultural awareness that travel brings can play a great part in their education. This is why we created adventure tours for families. However, we feel we should take this opportunity to warn you of some of the negative aspects of travelling with children. This is not necessarily intended to put you off, but to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision. |
CULTURE SHOCK |
Travelling off the beaten track - at grass roots level - you see the country as it is. From the minute you arrive, different sights, sounds and smells assault your senses. The Sri Lankan's have different customs, the food is new, the cities are usually noisy and crowded, and personal space may be an unknown concept. They may want to touch and play with western children, which you or they may find distressing. This culture shock can be daunting for adults, and even more so for children. |
DIFFERENT STANDARDS |
Standards of hygiene in Sri Lanka are sometimes considerably lower than at home. This is particularly the case when you travel off the traditional tourist path into more remote and economically under-developed regions. Remember that children may be more prone to sickness than adults and standards of medical care can be extremely variable. Similarly, standards of transport and accommodation may be lower than you are used to. However we have taken special care of choosing hotels considering the kinds . |
DEGREE OF PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY |
Most of our trips are more demanding than mainstream travel. Many include a reasonable amount of walking - be it sightseeing, day-walks or full scale trekking. Whilst your children could be fitter than you, a period of time in tropical heat with unfamiliar food could affect them adversely. |
CONCLUSION |
This may all seem a little negative but we must point out the potential lows as well as the highs. On the positive side, you're likely to find that children have a wonderful way of opening doors and breaking down cultural barriers. Children are usually more curious and less inhibited with foreigners than adults are, and you'll be amazed how quickly friendships build between your kids and local children despite the language barrier. |
